Rose's Story

The hiring challenge I faced as a veteran in today’s society was one of location, I moved to Los Angeles after quitting my position of four years in Dallas. As a teacher of social sciences, finding a position in a new town is difficult because I’m unsure of not only where to live but where to look for a position. Which schools are hiring? Where are they located? How much is rent in that part of the city and will I be able to afford it? Confused and frustrated after applying to what seemed like endless amounts of school districts, I applied to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) at the advice of a mentor

How We Helped

I was contacted by US. Vets because of their partnership with LAUSD and an interview was set-up for me to showcase a lesson taught as well as sit down with their Human Resources dept. On top of receiving a job offer with the school district, US Vets has also helped pay for the multitude of fees associated with the reciprocity of my teacher certification to California as well as supplying funds for gas and even dress clothes to begin my new position with. US Vets not only connected me with an interview and ultimately a position at LAUSD, but offered their support in my transition to California. I was coached prior to the interview to ensure my success and felt very fortunate to be a part of a hiring fair that was solely facilitated for us veterans. It is because of my connection to US Vets that I’m employed and my life in California moving forward.

Manuel Rendon Jr.

Military Background: U.S. Navy

New Career: Bureau of Commerce (US Census) Supervisory Survey Statistician

Rendon's Story

Mabuhay! My name is Manuel Rendon Jr. I am a first generation immigrant from the Philippines, and I served in the US Navy from 2002 to 2007 as a Hospital Corpsman (HM). After my career in the military, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for six (6) years. I did not have much difficulty in transitioning from military to civilian career up until my military service-connected disability affected my daily performance at work. As a result, my job options have become very limited. I decided to resign, and pursued a Master of Public Health degree from CSU Northridge with the help of my VA benefits. I graduated on May 2016, but I have been job hunting since January 2016. For the first nine (9) months, I submitted approximately 80 job applications, only got five (5) interviews, and no job offer.

How We Helped

On my 10th month of job hunting, I saw a U.S.VETS Career Network flyer at the VA Sepulveda Hospital and decided to reach out for help. Ms. Maggie Cutler was the counselor assigned to me. On my 1st week, Ms. Cutler reviewed my resume, help me developed my elevator speech, and prepared me for a U.S.VETS Career Network sponsored job fair. On my 2nd week, Ms. Cutler prepared me for interview by doing several mock interview. In addition, the career development portions helped me to organize my thoughts to focus on what career I would be happy. On my 3rd and 4th week, I got several interviews. My responses during my interviews were very organized, highly focused and I felt very confident on each one of them. Within 4 weeks, I believed I turned myself into a much more marketable applicant. I highly appreciate the support and encouragement received not to give up hope of finding a job that would meet my needs. As a result, I now have a better understanding of myself, and the career path I will pursue. I am now able to navigate the job search and create a better strategy to gain and maintain employment in the future. I am now aware of resources that U.S.VETS Career Network provides, and how I can use them effectively. As a result, I am now employed as a federal employee at Bureau of Commerce (US Census) as a Supervisory Survey Statistician (GS-11).

Why Rendon Recommends U.S.VETS Career Network
